Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Trained nursing professional who takes complete care of the feeble and ill patients under the strict guidance of registered nurses is known as Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Nurse Aide (CNA). It is necessary for the nursing assistants to clear the CNA training program, which consists of at least 100 hours of hands-on clinical training and 50 hours of classroom lectures. Once the aspirants complete this training schedule and receive an official recognition as a certified nursing assistant, they get listed on the state Nurse Aide registry.

CNAs are always on their toes, they are on the go 24 x 7. So many duties and responsibilities are placed on the shoulders of nursing assistants. The basic duty of a CNA is to look after the health and medical condition of the patients. They are in continuous touch with their patients. It is mandatory for all the nursing assistants to renew their certification within every 24 months. But, the certification will only be renewed if they have worked as a CNA for at least 48 hours in the 2 years since the issue of the certification.

It is necessary that all the certified nursing assistants accomplish their duties and responsibilities to make their patients feel better and healthy. Their duties also include the following:

  • Housekeeping:  this includes cleaning the rooms of the patients, changing bed covers, emptying trash, etc.
  • Keeping Medical History: CNAs keep a record of the medical condition of the patients, since their hospitalization. They keep an eye on the health condition of the patients and measure their vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration etc from time to time. CNAs make point they keep a check on the food and medication intake of the ailing patients.
  • Nutrition and Infection Control: Certified Nursing Assistants keep a sharp eye on the nourishment of the patients and also help feeding the ones who are physically challenged. They help the patients in bathing, shaving, cleaning toileting and so on.

Other miscellaneous duties of a certified nursing assistant or a CNA includes helping the sick in movement, exercising, supervising their medication, injections and glucose, making the patients ready for the surgery, check-ups and putting arrest to their anxiety prior to operation

Certified Nursing Assistants are the eyes and ears of the registered nurses. CNA are in contact with their patients continuously, so it is essential to be that CNAs should have empathetic behavior towards their patients.

As a job, certified nursing assistant’s needs a lot of physical as well as mental stamina. They should not panic in the emergency situations, rather be calm and composed and perform the emergency procedures required for that specific situation. Job of a CNA if done with devotion and passion will give satisfying results with attractive remunerations.
